David’s Comment: Tish B’Av (9th Av) – A Lesson for All of Us
1 Corinthians 10:11 These things happened to them as an example, they were written down for our instruction
I should have sent this comment our last Friday, as Sunday July 23rd, was the 9th day of the Hebrew month of Av. For most Jewish people, this date is the saddest day of the year. It is a day of deep mourning with most radio and TV stations in Israel playing somber, reflective programs. Some Jews fast on this day and many restaurants are closed. I often mention this day when I am speaking to Christians about the importance and relevance of the Bible Feasts, or more accurately, GOD’s appointed times, to show how YHVH has certain dates marked out as the days that He fulfills His plans and purposes. The events of the 9th of Av are very clear proof that GOD does indeed mark out certain dates, as almost every tragedy that has struck the Jewish people, actually occurred on the 9th of Av. The ninth day of Av seems to be a cursed day that is eternally destined for misfortune and tragedy.

The first such tragedy was the destruction of the First Temple on the  9th of Av in 586 BC
The Second Temple was destroyed on the 9th of Av in 70 AD
The First Crusade began on the 9th of Av, or August 15, 1096. Over 1.2 million Jews were killed.
The Jews were expelled from England on the 9th of Av, or July 18, 1290.
The Jews were expelled from France on the 9th of Av, or July 22, 1306.
The Jews were expelled from Spain on the 9th of Av, or July 31,1492.
Germany entered World War One on the 9th of Av, or August 1, 1914. This ultimately led to the Holocaust
SS commander Heinrich Himmler formally received approval from the Nazi Party for ?The Final Solution? on the 9th of Av, or August 2, 1941.
The deportation of the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto, most of whom were taken to be gassed in the Treblinka concentration camp, began on the 9th of Av, or July 23, 1942.

More recently the next day, the 10th of Av, has also been brought tragedy to Israel and the Jewish people.  On the 10th of Av, or July 18, 1994, the Buenos Airies Jewish Community Centre in Argentina was bombed in a terror attack carried out by terrorists connected to Hezbollah, killing 85 people and injuring another 300. And the ?Gaza Disengagement?, or the unilateral withdrawal by Israel from Gaza, also occurred on the 10th of Av, or August 15, 2005.

Many people believe that the reason behind the 9th day of Av being such a tragic day for the Jewish people is that we read in Numbers chapter 13 that GOD instructed Moses to send out 12 men from the Tribes of Israel to spy out the Promised Land ahead of the Jewish people entering in. They were sent to bring back a good report to encourage and prepare the 12 tribes to enter the land and inherit
it as their eternal homeland. Sadly, as we read in the passage, 10 of the spies brought back an evil report in order to persuade the Jewish people to stay in the desert and not enter the Promised Land. Their bad report created fear and discouragement, and as a result of there doubt and unbelief, the Jewish people spent the next 40 years wandering in the desert for 40 years, on what should have been a 2 or 3 week journey. The date the 10 spies returned with their bad report was the 9th of Av, and as another long term result, the above list of tragedies, and others, have struck the Jewish people on the very same date.

The events of the 9th of Av carry a very important lesson for all who look the GOD of Israel as the One who directs our lives. I am sure that when the 12 spies looked in the Promised Land, they all saw the same thing with their natural eyes. However Joshua and Caleb saw what they saw through the lens of GOD’s positive promises. They were very definately walking by faith and not by sight, while the other 10 spies were walking by sight and not by faith, and allowed the ‘giants‘ that they saw with their natural eyes to over-rule or negate the promises of GOD, and the tragic consequences have been borne by the Jewish people throughout our history.

I have written this comment to encourage everyone to learn the lesson from Israel’s history. It is imperative that we all walk by faith and not by sight in our personal lives and in all that GOD is calling us to do. We need to see ourselves and our life situation through the eyes of GOD, and He sees us as fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14), as the head and not the tail. He sees us as more than conquerors (Romans 8:37). And of course He sees all of us, Jewish or not as fellow citizens (Ephesians 2:19), and grafted into the same Olive Tree (Romans 11:17). Let us not bring misfortunes upon ourselves or our future generations, by seeing ourselves in any other way, than the way the YHVH sees us.

The LORD bless you as you bless Israel by standing in defense of her right to exist on the land given to the Jewish people by the GOD of Israel.  Lets pray that Israel will turn back to their GOD.  Do not be silent, but share this with your fellow Christians, share it with your pastors, and with anyone you have a chance to speak to. Lets also pray for a breakthrough to the Muslims, and please remember to pray Divine protection for all of the soldiers in the IDF.

Shabbat Shalom ……  David & Josie

1. IDF Soldier Age 21  Killed Friday Afternoon       Times of Israel News   July 21st

The Israeli army on Saturday named the soldier killed Friday sniper fire along the Gaza border as Staff Sgt. Aviv Levi.  Levi, a 21-year-old, was an infantry soldier in the army?s Givati Brigade. Levi was the first IDF fatality on the Gaza front since Operation Protective Edge in 2014. ?The IDF shares in the family?s sorrow,? the military said in a statement. Defense Minister Liberman wrote in a tweet that ?Levi fell defending the nation, the land and the residents of the Gaza periphery. My heart is with his family this evening. May his memory be blessed. In a Facebook post on Saturday, Levi?s girlfriend, wrote of a fearless young man with whom she was planning a future. ?My dearest love, my fighter. The heart burns and the tears don?t stop. Who would have thought you?d be gone so quickly?? she wrote. Levi?s death on Friday sparked a wave of Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip. Four Gazans ? three of them confirmed by Hamas as its members ? were killed in Friday?s violence. Please pray for
the salvation of the family and friends of Aviv Levi

2. Hamas Rushes to Call Ceae-Fire after Severe Israeli Retaliation for Death of IDF Soldier    Times of Israel News   July 21st

Israeli TV news reported that while Israel?s response to the killing of Aviv Levi was unusually harsh, the IDF was on the brink of a more dramatic operation when Hamas rushed to agree a ceasefire. A top Israeli official said Hamas had pledged to stop rocket fire, shootings, and kite and balloon arson attacks, but Hamas denied this. The ceasefire announced overnight Friday-Saturday largely held in place Saturday, but was broken once by the launch of an incendiary device that sparked a fire in a cowshed and storage center at Kibbutz Nahal Oz. This prompted Israeli reprisal fire at a Hamas post on Saturday afternoon. The Israeli response was the second tank shell strike in the day. Earlier a tank fired at a Hamas observation point east of Gaza City, saying it was retaliation for an attempted border infiltration in northern Gaza. The suspects returned to the enclave, according to the army. There were no reports of Palestinian of any casualties in Gaza. Pray that Israel immediately implements its plans to relentlessly crush Hamas if they break the cease-fire.

3. Israel Rescues & Relocates 800 Aid Workers from Syria   Israel Today News   July 23rd

Last weekend Israel played a critical role in rescuing hundreds of humanitarian workers and their families trapped in southern Syria. Eight hundred so-called “White Helmets” and their family members had taken refuge in Quneitra, the one small part of southern Syria not already under the control of Russian-backed regime forces. The White Helmets are mostly Syrian nationals who over the past several years have taken it upon themselves to conduct rescue operations following major military confrontations in the war-torn country. They operate mostly in rebel-held territory where nearly all civil services have collapsed. But, that’s resulted in them being identified with opposition forces, and therefore a target for the Syrian army. The US, UK, Germany and Canada had all been aiding the White Helmets logistically in recent months. As it became clear that the forces of dictator Bashar Assad would reconquer the south of Syria, those same nations lobbied Israel and Jordan to help get them out, with the promise that the White Helmets and their families could then take up residence in the West. Over the weekend, a convoy of buses carrying the White Helmets streamed into northern Israel under cover of darkness. They were then escorted by Israeli and UN forces to a border crossing into Jordan. Israelis involved in the rescue operation told reporters that it was one of the most emotional efforts to help Syria to date. “There were lots of children,” said one Israeli. Pray that the world will begin to appreciate Israel instead of blaming Israel for the problems in the Middle East

4. Syrian Warplane Shot Down Over Israel     Times of Israel News   July 24th

The Israeli Air Force shot down a Syrian fighter jet that traveled two kilometers into Israeli airspace on Tuesday afternoon.  ?Two Patriot missiles were fired at a Syrian Sukhoi-model fighter jet,? the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement. The IDF said the aircraft was monitored as it approached the border with the Golan Heights. One of the pilots, identified as Col. Amran Mara?e, was killed when the plane was shot down, a Syrian military source told Sputnik, a Russian government-backed news outlet. The fate of the other airman was not immediately known. The Israel Defense Forces said it had repeatedly warned Syria against flying aircraft close to the border before shooting down a fighter jet that the military claims traveled two kilometers into Israeli territory. ?We issued numerous warnings through numerous channels and in various languages to make sure that no one on the other side violates Israeli airspace or threatens Israeli civilians or sovereignty,? an IDF spokesperson told reporters.  Pray that this does not escalate to a conflict with Syria

5. Rabbis Concerned After Block Falls From Western Wall    Israel Today News   July 25th

One of the large ancient cut stones making up what’s now known as the “Western Wall” of Jerusalem’s Temple Mount fell from its place and crashed to the platform below early Monday morning. A woman who was praying there at the time was nearly hit by the massive block. This happened just hours after the conclusion of the Tisha B’Av fast, during which religious Jews lament the losses of the first and second temples. The timing and the severity of the event prompted top rabbis to find spiritual significance in the falling of the stone. Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, who is the head rabbi at the Western Wall, said that “this is an exceptional and rare event that has not happened in decades. The fact that such a powerful event took place after the fast on the 9th of Av, in which we mourned the destruction of the our temples, raises questions and demands soul-searching.” The section of the Western Wall where the stone fell has been closed for the time being to allow archaeologists and engineers to examine the damage and the potential for future collapses.Israeli experts have been warning for years that the entire Temple Mount is at risk of collapse, and in need of urgent attention by structural engineers. Please pray that no more blocks will fall from the wall and the engineers will be able to stablise the wall

6. IDF Soldier Wounder by Gaza Gunfire     INN News   July 26th

A soldier was slightly injured on Wednesday evening after terrorists fired at an IDF force operating along the Gaza border fence. The IDF Spokesperson’s Office reported that the IDF attacked Hamas positions along the Gaza Strip in response. Three terrorists were reported killed in Gaza and several wounded during the exchange of fire. During the day, a number of fires occurred in the communities surrounding the Gaza Strip, with the combination of the intense heat and the firebombs causing fire fighting teams to work even harder than usual. Fires broke out in 3 separate areas inside tehe Irael side of the Gaza border, caused by arson balloon attacks. There were no casualties in all the incidents. The truce that Hamas called for last weekend is almost at its end, and the possibility of another war is Gaza is very real. Pray that if Israel is forced to enter Gaza to stop the terror attacks, that Hamas will be totally defeated and removed from power.

7. Both Israel and Hamas Forces on I24 News   July 26th

Hamas, the Islamist leadership of the Gaza Strip, has announced it will respond to “Israeli aggression” after the Israeli Army (IDF) killed three members of its military wing on Wednesday. A Hamas’ spokesman Fawzi said that Israeli crimes and aggression will not be met with silence. PM Netanyahu, while speaking to new enlistees to the IDF Thursday, said that Israel’s fight with Hamas is “a test of will,” and that the IDF must “do what it takes” to protect Israelis. “We’re managing difficult fronts in the north and in the south,” he told the soldiers, and “the burden of the country’s borders, and the country, falls on you.” “You’re going to go through hard but important training that will give you the tools both to defend yourselves and to defend the country,” he added. Israel’s minister of public security and strategic affairs said on Thursday that the IDF is taking “great strides” to ready for an expansive military operation against Hamas in Gaza. “We are being dragged into a wider operation with Hamas. We are approaching with great strides – because of Hamas – a situation in which the IDF will have to embark on a wide-scale operation,” Erdan said. The armed wing of Hamas, stated that it was encouraging all forces to raise alert to “the highest levels” and that “Israel will pay the price for its last actions.” Pray that in the event of a war with Hamas, Israel will have a supernatural and quick victory.
