Guest Comment: A Heart for Israel  – by Andrew Sawatsky (Calgary – Canada)
Isaiah 62:1 ?For Zion?s sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem?s sake I will not remain quiet, until her righteousness shines forth like the dawn, and her salvation like a blazing torch?.

In the spring of 2008, my wife and I had the opportunity to visit Israel. On the first day of the tour we came to Mt. Carmel. From the Carmelite Monastery viewing area we could see some of southern Galilee and the plains of Esdraelon, an expansive and beautiful panorama to behold. And, the presumed site of Elijah?s defeat of the priests of Baal is near to where we were standing. As we began our descent to return to the bus, two Israeli military jets rose up from the small airstrip below the promontory. Within seconds they were high overhead.  All at once the Lord got my attention and these are the exact words I heard, ?There is power there, but I have infinite power and I fight for Israel.? Scripture affirms His stance in 2 Chronicles 20:1 – 30 and Exodus. 17:10 -13. A large number of miraculous events in the 1948 and 1967 wars would also confirm that God has specific intentions and a special place in His heart for Israel.

Two days before our scheduled departure, while selecting food for the evening buffet, the following words came, ?The scales will fall from the eyes of God?s chosen people, the blinders will be removed and, the veils which obscure vision, will be torn from top to bottom?. (These last words are stated almost exactly as heard). Those promises are also supported Biblically. Some months later, early one September morning at home, as I was praying for a specific fellowship, I heard the following words, ?If you don?t soon have a heart for Israel, I will pass you by.? I knew I had a heart for Israel, so this must have referred  to the people for whom I was interceding. That message was relayed to the leadership, but no action so far. Almost two months later another word ?The time is short!? I think the admonition to have a heart for Israel is applicable to all Christians, especially those who are neutral or have taken a stand against her.

Ever since Satan became aware of God?s plans for Israel, there has been scheming, rhetoric and action directed towards its destruction. A modern day economic form, BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions), likely had its origins in the 2001 Durban anti-racist conference. What is almost incomprehensible is that certain prominent Christian leaders, a number of churches and entire denominations have joined that movement. Do they not know about 2 Corinthians 6:14, not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers? And Genesis 12:3, the Lord will bless those who bless Israel (implied) and curse those who curse Israel. ?Cursing? Israel also includes ?taking her lightly?.

I think a good way to start blessing Israel is to get some clues from scripture, eg. Romans 1:16, (NKJV) For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek?.  It was God?s plan from the beginning to have His chosen people be the first to proclaim the Good News.  And they did, otherwise we would not have the church and the scriptures. I believe that at some point in these last days, Israel will once again come into its own and, in my estimation, be proclaimers ?par excellence? of the Gospel, like the world has never before seen or heard, with signs and wonders following.

Several prominent Jewish evangelists have discovered that if you can successfully evangelize Jewish people, it is much easier then to reach out to the non-Jew. That is an interesting correlation, probably explained by the previous quote from Romans. So, let us pray for and share the Good news of Jesus with the Jewish people in whatever way the Spirit leads, be it interpersonally or through various ministries. And, when you meet them, be compassionate and loving, speaking kindly to them. They are the most hated and reviled people in the world today. It  is truly amazing that they have been able to endure the intolerance and abuse as long as they have.

God is merciful and slow to anger, however at some point judgement will come. Keep on praying for Israel and those who oppose her through religiously inspired hatred, ie Islam, heavily biased resolutions, eg. by the UN and more recently, BDS, which targets the economy but also educators. It seems to me that Satan is feverishly increasing his  deceptions and other evil plans because he knows that Israel will soon come into its destiny, receiving Yeshua, which means his end is near. Our God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob will prevail! Hallelujah!

Isaiah 62:1 ?For Zion?s sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem?s sake I will not remain quiet, until her righteousness shines forth like the dawn, and her salvation like a blazing torch?.

The LORD bless you as you bless Israel by standing in defense of her right to exist on the land given to the Jewish people by the God of Israel.  Lets pray that Israel will turn back to their God.  Do not be silent, but share this with your fellow Christians, share it with your pastors, and with anyone you have a chance to speak to. Lets also pray for that breakthrough to the Muslims, and please remember to pray Divine protection for all of the soldiers in the IDF.

Shabbat Shalom ……  David & Jose

1. PM Netanyahu Under Scrutiny Again

Ari Harow, a former chief of staff and aide to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, signed a deal on Friday to turn state?s witness as part of ongoing investigations into alleged corruption by Israel?s premier. According to a statement from the Israel Police, Harow is expected to receive six months of community service and a NIS 700,000 fine ($193,000) on breach of trust charges in exchange for his testimony against his former boss. News of the deal, seen by observers as a turning point in the police investigations, follows a gag order imposed Thursday on details pertaining to the case. It came a day after Israeli police said for the first time that a number of corruption investigations involving Netanyahu deal with ?bribery, fraud and breach of trust.? The police stopped short of saying that the Israeli leader was directly suspected of these crimes. Harow has been under investigation since mid-2015 on suspicion of using his ties to Netanyahu to advance his private business interests. Police have recommended he be indicted for bribery and breach of trust in the case, but the attorney general has yet to file formal charges. That investigation, dubbed Case 2000 by police, is ongoing, as is a separate corruption investigation ? Case 1000 ? into allegations the prime minister received illicit gifts from billionaire benefactors. Harow is reportedly willing to provide information in both probes, having served as chief of staff during the time of the alleged deal with Mozes and while Netanyahu is said to have received gifts worth thousands of shekels. Pray that the truth will be quickly exposed

2. Demonstrations Against Jerusalem Gay Parade   INN News  August 4th

Dozens of right-wing demonstrators associated with the Lehava anti-assimilation organization gathered in the capital Thursday to protest the Jerusalem gay parade that took place last Thursday. The demonstration was led Lehava chief Bentzi Gopstein, attorney Itamar Ben-Gvir, and Hevron activist Baruch Marzel.?You have no reason to [march] here,? Gopstein told parade participants. ?You cannot have a [gay] pride march in the Land of Israel. If you have a problem, we will help you, we will treat you. This is not pride, it is an abomination.? Gopstein claimed the parade offended residents, and said the marchers would not have held such an event in an Arab community. ?They would never let you hold such a march. Show your respect to Jerusalem residents, there?s nothing for you here [to march for].? While only several dozen protesters were allowed to join the Lehava demonstration, Marzel claimed he and fellow demonstrators represented the majority opinion in Jerusalem. “We came here to protest against these people who are desecrating Jerusalem and the Holy Land. These marchers are endangering all the Jews in Israel,? said Marzel. We represent the overwhelming majority of people in Jerusalem, who oppose the parade in the holy city. The nuclear family is a holy thing, and it?s important to protect it.? Thousands of marchers took part in the Jerusalem gay parade Thursday, which was secured by a large contingent of police officers and Border Police officers. Participants in the march were required to undergo security checks before being allowed into the parade?s security perimeter. Pray that these abominations will be banned from all Israeli cities and towns

3. Anti Israel PA  Official Seeking Medical Treatment   World Israel News  Aug 4th

Saeb Erekat, a senior Palestinian official and long time critic of Israel, is suffering from severe pulmonary disease and seeking life-saving treatment in Israel. Ynet News reported last week that 62-year-old Erekat was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis more than a year ago and is currently on a waiting list for a lung transplant both in Israel and the USA. Erekat has been receiving additional treatment at a hospital in central Israel, but doctors have warned that his condition cannot improve without an immediate transplant, the report said. Erekat is notorious for his anti Israel rhetoric. He has accused the Jewish state of committing genocide and war crimes and even equated Israel with the Islamic State terror group. Erekat?s addition to Israel?s waiting list for a lung transplant caused a public outcry, prompting the Ministry of Health to issue a statement saying the Palestinian official will be eligible for a transplant only under rare circumstances. Pray that Erekat publically renounces his critisizm of Israel before he becomes eligible to be treated in an Israeli hospital

4. Jared Kushner: Not Optimisic for Solution in Israel / Palestinian Conflict   Times of Israel News  Aug 4th

In a private, off-the-record conversation with congressional interns on Monday, Jared Kushner said he was not sure the Trump administration could offer anything ?unique? to solve the Israeli Palestinian conflict and praised Israel?s handling of a recent crisis over the Temple Mount. The discussion was recorded by one of the interns present. Kushner?s entire answer to a question about the White House?s attempts to broker an Israeli-Palestinian peace accord, which US President Donald Trump has repeatedly referred to as the ?ultimate deal.? ?What do we offer that?s unique? I don?t know,? he said. ?I?m sure everyone that?s tried this has been unique in some ways, but again we?re trying to follow very logically. We?re thinking about what the right end state is. And we?re trying to work with the parties very quietly to see if there?s a solution.? ?And,? he went on, ?there may be no solution, but it?s one of the problem sets that the president asked us to focus on. So we?re going to focus on it and try to come to the right conclusion in the near future.? Pray that there will never be a peace treaty that does not abide by the Word of God

5. Israeli Jets Strike Gaza After Rocket Attacks    Times of Israel News    Aug 9th

Israeli Air Force jets struck two Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip overnight Tuesday, injuring at least three people, hours after a rocket fired from the Palestinian enclave hit an open area in southern Israel. The Israeli military said in a statement that in response to the projectile attack in the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council earlier Tuesday, ?IAF aircraft targeted two Hamas posts in the northern Gaza Strip.? A Gaza security source told AFP that Israeli warplanes had struck two bases belonging to Hamas? military wing, causing significant damage. A medical official at the Shifa Hospital in Gaza City said three people were being treated for injuries, including a 26-year-old man who was in critical condition after being struck in the head with shrapnel. Videos and photos, allegedly of the Israeli strikes, were circulating on social media.  Pray that the situation on the Israel /  Gaza border does not escalate into another summer conflict

6. IDF Uncovers More Attack Tunnels in Gaza    Arutz 7 News   Aug 10th

The IDF and the Israel Security Agency (ISA or Shin Bet) on Thursday exposed significant infrastructures belonging to the Hamas terrorist organization in Gaza, including terrorist tunnels intended to be used as hideouts for terrorists and for the transfer of weapons. In a significant part of the infrastructure, as shown by aerial photographs, Hamas takes advantage of Gazans and hides the entry shafts of the tunnels underneath houses and public buildings, such as schools and mosques. Choosing to place the shafts in these buildings is intended to disguise the tunnels and make it difficult to attack them. During combat, these objectives become legitimate military targets under international law. The head of the IDF?s Southern Command, clarified that “we have intelligence. Anyone staying in these houses endangers himself and his family. Buildings used as cover for underground construction will become legitimate military targets.” As part of its combat strategy, Hamas continuously deploys itself in a civilian environment, directing its capabilities to hit the Israeli home front from those areas. This is done in order to try to make it difficult for the IDF to locate, attack and thwart the organization?s military infrastructure. As well, by exploiting the civilian population of Gaza, the terrorist organization seeks to undermine the legitimacy of the IDF and the State of Israel. Pray that all tunnels and rockets launching sites in Gaza and the northern border will be discovered and destroyed

7. Possible Village of the Disciples Uncovered     Newsweek Magazine

Archaeologists digging in modern-day Israel believe they have found the settlement where three of Yeshua?s apostles made their homes. The remains of a settlement discovered by the sea of Galilee in the Bethsaida Valley Nature Reserve is thought to be the site of the lost Roman city of Julias. The researchers believe the discovery of an advanced Roman-style bathhouse on the site indicates the existence of a city. They agree that this discovery makes the site in question the most likely to be Julias out of three possible sites in the area. The Jewish historian Josephus Flavius wrote that King Philip Herod, son of the biblical King Herod, transformed a settlement in the area called Bethsaida into a significant Roman city, which he called Julias after Julia Augusta, mother of the Roman Emperor Tiberius. “Josephus reported that the king had upgraded Bethsaida from a village into a polis, a proper city,” said Dr. Mordechai Aviam of Kinneret College. The bathhouse attests to the existence of urban culture.” In the gospel of John it names Philip, Andrew and Peter among Yeshua?s followers as being from the town of Bethsaida. Byzantine ruins had already been recorded at the site, but the archaeologists have discovered an older Roman layer beneath them, 211 meters below sea level, containing pottery sheds and a mosaic as well as the bathhouse. Two coins were also discovered in the Roman layer; a bronze coin dating from the end of the 2nd century and a silver one depicting the Emperor Nero and likely dating back to 65-66 A.D.
